Winslow Taft - Open Container
Celebrated designer and award-winning creative director Winslow Taft made his first venture into fine art photography with Open Container at The Old Bailey Gallery in the Spring of 2025.
Taft began noticing and photographing flattened aluminum cans while passing the time on daily pandemic-era walks though the Crestwood North neighborhood of Birmingham. He eventually amassed a body of work exceeding 500 images (each of a unique individual can, with no repeats). His detailed studies of these consumer castoffs find beauty in the bends, folds and corrosion of forgotten trash. Bold brand logos still shine optimistically through the distortion of destruction. Each flattened can tells a story, a fleeting moment of refreshment before being crushed and discarded.
Sales from Open Container benefited InToto Creative Arts, a Birmingham-based nonprofit organization providing opportunities for artistic expression, healing, and connection for people affected by social and economic hardships.
