Jenny Fine

There, There

Jenny Fine returned to Alabama after her New York gallery debut at Ortega y Gasset Projects, reimagining and reinventing her NYC show with added layers of mystery for the Birmingham audience. The works in this series merged photography with ritual, memory with material, in a search for a connection beyond the veil. This solo exhibition was on display from August-November 2025, as summer turned to fall and the veil grew thinner and thinner.

Jenny Fine (b. 1981, Enterprise, AL) is a visual artist, caregiver and art teacher living and working in Alabama. Based in the photographic form, Fine’s practice employs time as the primary material in her exploration of personal and cultural memory, historical identity and cultural inheritance in the American south.

‘There, There’ drew inspiration from the psychomanteum — a device used for spirit communication — from the ectoplasm photography of mediums generations ago, and from Victorian-era spiritualism. The objects within this immersive installation — icons of luck, ritual, and protection — formed an armor for navigating grief, fashioned a tether line into the hereafter, and grasped with determination for presence in the face of absence.

Events throughout the length of the exhibit included an ekphrastic writing workshop guided by writer Miriam Calleja and a healing sound bath with Erin of E Mind Move. Participants at both events channeled energy from, and responded to, the otherworldly energy of Jenny Fine’s powerful visual presentation.
