PLAYERS: Paintings by Will Johnson and Morgan Jones Johnston
May - July 2026
Texas artist and musician Will Johnson celebrates the unsung heroes of baseball with his folk-art inspired biographical portraits. Birmingham's own Morgan Jones Johnston explores theatricality and performance in her imaginative paintings of feminine characters. “PLAYERS” brought their work together, with walls of faces facing each other across the gallery in a dialogue between history and mythology, masculine and feminine, grit and glamour.
an opening reception including intimate live, acoustic performances by Will Johnson and Duquette Johnston (Morgan’s partner in life and creativity).
The exhibition coincided with the release of Patience For The Ride: The Art and Life of Will Johnson (2026, Texas A&M University Press). The book includes the voices of many contributors, including gallery curator Dan Bailey, celebrating Will and his creative output as a musician, painter, novelist and inspiring example to others. A limited number of signed copies are available from the gallery. Email to inquire.
